C

C Type batteries are amongst the most common size of battery used in the UK. According to the British Battery Manufacturers Association, 7% of all pre-charged batteries sold in 2001 were size C.

Most pre-charged C Type batteries use either Alkaline or Zinc Carbon technology. Zinc Carbon batteries are less expensive, and work best in steady and lighter drain applications, such as torches. The Alkaline version is more modern, and improves on several of the Zinc Carbon battery deficiencies, as it:

Performs better, and over a longer period, in high-drain applications, such as electrical motors in toys. This equates to effective operating times that are multiples (between 4 to 15 times) of those for a comparable Zinc Carbon battery.
Has a longer shelf life, with some current premium brands exceeding 6 years.
Performs well even at lower temperatures, down to about -30°C.

Rechargeable size C batteries are available using either Nickel-Metal-Hydride (NiMH) or Nickel-Cadmium (NICAD or NiCd) technology. While NiCd batteries are unsurpassed in their ability to provide strong bursts of power, NiMH batteries are more modern, provide greater capacity and have no memory-effect. Rechargeable size C batteries can replace single use batteries in most applications that require one or two batteries. Applications with many batteries work only if the device was expressly designed for rechargeable batteries. Sadly, rechargeable batteries don't work in most digital radios - they take six cells, and need a higher voltage than NiMH or NiCd batteries can provide.
