Battery Chargers

Getting best use from rechargeable batteries depends very much on using the right Battery Charger. We carry battery chargers to cater for many different uses, types of battery and budget.

Top-of-the-range battery chargers will feature:

Electronic charge control, to stop charging automatically when the batteries are full;
Individual cell monitoring, to ensure each cell receives exactly the amount of charge required;
A variable charge current, to provide the right amount of power for the type and size of the battery;
A choice of add-on functions, such as battery testing or a cooling fan to allow even faster charging.

Crucially, the charger needs to match the battery: Only high quality rechargeable batteries are suitable for fast charging; low-self-discharge NiMH batteries need to be charged more slowly than standard or top-capacity NiMH batteries. In general, a slower charge will extend a battery's life, and is more likely to result in top battery performance.

Less expensive chargers are possible by cutting down on features: monitoring batteries in pairs cuts the number of circuits in half, but means a 4-bay charger can only cope with two or four batteries at a time; replacing electronic charge control with a timer also reduces cost, but means you risk overcharging (i.e. damaging) your batteries; the most basic chargers won't switch off at all - you need to unplug them.

Energy 16 Charger

The energy 16 charger from ANSMANN is the charger of choice if you're looking for top battery performance during intensive use over long periods of time, and you're using many batteries. While super fast charging appears to be attractive, the high temperatures and large charge currents cause batteries to deteriorate more quickly. The Energy range of chargers operates at the other end of the scale, applying as much TLC to your batteries as possible. While still being quite fast (AA 2000mAh NiMH batteries take about 3 hours to charge fully), this charger really wins on care for your rechargeable batteries. When you insert a battery, the charger inspects it, and if appropriate will start a "refresh cycle". This involves a complete discharge, followed by a full charge, which in some cases will result in improved performance for batteries suffering from memory effect. Each individually controlled charge bay gives a quick indication of battery charge level before starting the charge process. The charger has four slots for PP3/9V batteries, and six bays which can each take two AA, AAA, or one C, or D size batteries. This means you can charge twelve AA batteries or six D batteries at once. It is designed to stay plugged in on your desk, so that you can load batteries as needed, and leave them in the charger until you want to use them. A universal mains voltage (100V-240V) adapter means you don't have to be without your charger when you're away.
