Zinc-Air Battery TechnologyZinc-Air batteries are quite similar to Silver Oxide batteries, with the exception that the power producing chemical reaction consumes carbon dioxide. As such, the batteries feature small holes which are covered with tape when supplied. Zinc-Air batteries are more space efficient than Silver Oxide batteries, resulting in an extension of discharge times up to a factor of two. The major drawback is that, once exposed to carbon dioxide, they have virtually no shelf life. As such they have become virtually dedicated to powering hearing aids, where small size and maximum discharge time matter, but the battery will never be left idle for long during its service life.
