| The Panasonic Oxyride battery is one of the most exciting recent developments in consumer battery technology. Launched around July 2005, the battery features a new chemical system optimized for today's high-power devices such as digital cameras and MP3 players. In one of our tests, it lasted 4½ times as long as a high quality alkaline AA battery. That extra power translates directly into more pictures or more music tracks per set of batteries. Compared to the huge boost in performance, the price premium is quite moderate, making this battery one of the best value power sources for your digital camera or MP3 player. The only 'fly in the ointment' is that Panasonic Oxyride batteries are not suitable for all applications, and many classic battery operated devices such as torches, remote controls, etc. are best powered with other batteries. Part of the reason is that Oxyride technology (Oxy Nickel Hydroxide in full) operates at a higher voltage than standard alkaline batteries. Although they are all rated at a 'nominal' 1.5V, alkaline batteries start at just over 1.6V when fresh, while Oxyride batteries can start as high 1.74V. This higher voltage is exactly what helps the battery perform so well in high drain devices, but it could be just a bit too much for other applications. | |
