The Energy 8 charger from Ansmann is the charger of choice if you're looking for top battery performance during intensive use over long periods of time. While super fast charging appears to be attractive, the high temperatures and large charge currents cause batteries to deteriorate more quickly. The Energy range of chargers operates at the other end of the scale, applying as much TLC to your batteries as possible. While still being quite fast (AA 2000mAh NiMH batteries take about 3 hours to charge fully), this charger really wins on care for your rechargeable batteries. When you insert a battery, the charger inspects it, and if appropriate will start a "refresh cycle". This involves a complete discharge, followed by a full charge, which in some cases will result in improved performance for batteries suffering from memory effect. Each individually controlled charge bay gives a quick indication of battery charge level before starting the charge process. The charger has two slots for PP3/9V batteries, and four bays which can take AA, AAA, C, or D size batteries. Two bays can take two AA or AAA size batteries each, thus charging up to 6 AA batteries at once. It is designed to stay plugged in on your desk, so that you can load batteries as needed, and leave them in the charger until you want to use them. A universal mains voltage (100V-240V) adapter means you don't have to be without your charger when you're away. The Professional version of the charger adds an additional built-in battery tester. It works with the most common battery types such as 1.5V alkaline batteries (AA, AAA, C, D), 9V alkaline batteries, 12V A23, 1.5V button cells (LR44, LR43, LR54), 1.44V Zinc-Air cells (sizes 675/13/312), 3V Lithium coin cells (CR1025 - CR2450), 3V and 6V Lithium photo batteries (CR123, CR2, 2CR5 and CRP2), and (last butnot least) 1.2V rechargeable batteries (AA, AAA, C and D). Within seconds, the tester shows the battery voltage, and (for rechargeable batteries) indicates the charge level to the nearest 10%.
